Microsoft’s history with Windows 10 updates has been all over the map. Some have included major changes and new features, and others have been comparatively anemic bug fix bundles dressed up as an important update. The May 2020 Update is somewhere in between. There are some significant changes, but not all of them will be apparent to the average user without some additional downloads. 

Probably the most notable change in the new Windows 10 build is Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux 2. It includes a custom Microsoft-developed Linux open-source kernel that integrates with Windows 10. That allows you to run virtualized Linux packages alongside your Windows applications with much greater performance capabilities compared with the old Linux Subsystem tools. Microsoft also says it will update this kernel periodically via Windows update.

You will probably notice some alterations in Cortana and the Windows search UI. Cortana left the search box last year, and now it’ll be more mobile. Cortana will act more like a standard app that you can move around the screen. You’ll still be able to type queries and enter voice commands, though. Meanwhile, the search UI will be less cluttered. Microsoft expanded the search indexer’s reach in the last 2019 update, but that didn’t return useful results very often and made the UI harder to navigate. In the May 2020 update, search will be more narrow. There will also be a few quick search buttons for things like weather and top news. 

Microsoft has been adding new features to the Your Phone client for the past year, and the May 2020 Update will bring new capabilities like instant file transfers (for select devices). However, you’ll need to download the Your Phone app to get that set up — the OS won’t prompt you. There’s also DirectX 12 Ultimate, with improved ray tracing support. Naturally, you’ll need a compatible video card and games to enjoy that. 

Mainstream users will begin seeing the May update in a few weeks, but you can join the Insiders program to get access now. That’s available in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program.

A huge new leak from Max Weinbach and the EverythingApplePro YouTube channel has provided us with our most accurate look yet at Apple’s upcoming and brand new iPhone 12 design. Before delving into the iPhone 12’s features and new form factor, it’s worth noting that Weinbach has supplied accurate information about upcoming iPhone models in the past. Last year, for instance, Weinbach accurately revealed that Apple was going to add a dedicated night mode option to the iPhone 11. So while Apple rumors can sometimes be a dime a dozen, this latest iPhone 12 rumor is particularly credible.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s dive right in. Now it’s no secret that the iPhone design hasn’t changed all that much over the years. In fact, the current iPhone — with its rounded edges — doesn’t look markedly different from the iPhone 6 which was released all the way back in 2014. And while it’s a nice design, it’s clearly time for something fresh and new. To that end, the iPhone 12 design will feature flatter edges and will be more reminiscent of the iPhone 5. As we highlighted earlier this week, the iPhone 12 will basically look like a smaller version of Apple’s most recent iPad Pro models.

So without further ado, here’s what Apple’s next-gen iPhone 12 Pro Max is going to look like. Note that the camera alignment is slightly different from some previous renders we’ve seen.

The renders below illustrate that Apple managed to shrink the bezels relative to its iPhone 11 Pro models. You’ll also notice that the notch on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is smaller than on the iPhone 11, a design which corroborates some previous rumors we’ve seen about the upcoming design.

Incidentally, John Prosser, who has shared a number of accurate Apple leaks in recent memory, corroborated the veracity of the 3D model below.

For what it’s worth, Weinbach notes that the design above is likely 70% complete, which is to say we may see some subtle changes by the time Apple officially unveils the device. Specifically, the sizing and spacing of the camera module may not be exactly how it appears here. Note, however, that the camera lenses themselves will not protrude out as much relative to the current iPhone 11 Pro models. Further, the camera module on the back will be slightly larger and, as previously rumored, will include a LIDAR sensor on the bottom right.

Size-wise, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a tad taller and wider than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Still, with smaller bezels, the display to body ratio is higher. Specifically, the bezels on the iPhone 12 Pro Max are .9mm thinner.

While Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro models will definitely boast the design featured above, it’s possible that the cheaper iPhone 12 models may feature the same type of rounded edge design we’ve seen on previous models.

Of course, it goes without saying that the biggest iPhone 12 feature will be its support for 5G. In turn, it’s no surprise that the antenna bands on the iPhone 12 Pro Max are a tad wider than previous iPhone models. Incidentally, the iPhone 12 will feature improved cellular and Wi-Fi speeds. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 will likely boast improved speakers that will be 10-15% louder with better dynamic range.

On a somewhat minor note, Apple is said to be exploring a new Navy Blue color for the iPhone that may replace the Midnight Green color it unveiled last year.

The iPhone 12 has all the makings of a blockbuster release. Of course, the million-dollar question is when we might see Apple’s iPhone 12 models actually arrive in stores. With the coronavirus pandemic still in full swing, there’s a chance Apple may push back its iPhone 12 release from September to October. With the coronavirus situation changing weekly, it’s still far too early to make any solid predictions in either direction, though we have heard Apple will try to decide on an official launch window sometime over the next six weeks.

Apple yesterday released a long-awaited successor to the iPhone SE. Similar to the original iPhone SE Apple released back in 2016, the latest model is affordable and packs many of Apple’s most advanced technologies into a smaller form factor.

While the iPhone SE is positioned as a budget device, its specs are nothing to scoff at. The device boasts a 12-megapixel camera on the rear, wireless charging support, Touch ID, and Apple’s blazing fast A13 Bionic chip. In effect, the iPhone SE — which starts at $399 for a 64GB model — provides many of the exact same features Apple introduced on its iPhone 11 lineup last year.

The new iPhone SE is certainly compelling, but one downside is that the device boasts a 4.7-inch display. This was a curious design choice from Apple given that the original iPhone SE — which boasted a 4-inch display — was specifically positioned for users who prefer a compact form factor. The new iPhone SE is effectively the same size as an iPhone 8, and while that’s still smaller than Apple’s iPhone 11 models, it’s decidedly bigger than the original.

Consider this: Apple released the original iPhone SE in March of 2016. At the time, the most advanced iPhones available were the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, devices which respectively featured 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays. If we are to assume that a 4.7-inch device is acceptable for users who prefer a smaller form factor, then why did Apple even bother releasing the original iPhone SE in the first place?

The reality is that the 4-inch form factor of the original iPhone SE is an ideal size for many users who simply aren’t interested in a device that can’t be used comfortably with one hand. In turn, the 4.7-inch display on the new iPhone SE is a bit disappointing and suggests that Apple is either unaware or doesn’t care about why the original device was beloved by so many.

Demand for the original iPhone SE exceeded all of Apple’s expectations, precisely because the company conceded that it got too swept up in the notion that bigger is always better.

“We’re thrilled with the response that we’ve seen on it,” Tim Cook said about the original iPhone SE a few years ago. “It is clear that there is a demand there even much beyond what we thought.”

And again, much of that demand centered on the size of the device, not its price.

I’m sure the new iPhone SE will sell decently well as it’s the smallest iPhone Apple currently sells. Still, the 4-inch display Apple introduced on the iPhone 5, for many, remains the ideal form factor.

The idea of buying a brand new iPhone with a design that’s six years old will certainly be off-putting to some, even with the shockingly low price tag that comes along with it. If you want the latest and greatest from Apple, you’ll obviously need to spring for an iPhone 11 or an iPhone 11 Pro model instead. But the iPhone SE offers impressive features and the return of Touch ID for a wonderfully affordable price, and now a new leak reveals a few additional details that might help seal the deal.

Head over to Apple’s website and you’ll see that the new iPhone SE for 2020 starts at just $399 for a model with 64GB of internal storage. You’ll also see that you can upgrade to 128GB for $449 or double the internal storage again to 256GB for $549. You’ll see the full dimensions of the new iPhone SE as well as the weight, and you’ll see plenty of specs listed, including the following:

• A13 Bionic chip
• Retina HD display
• 4.7-inch (diagonal) widescreen LCD Multi‑Touch display with IPS technology
• 1334-by-750-pixel resolution at 326 ppi
• 1400:1 contrast ratio (typical)
• True Tone display
• Wide color display (P3)
• 12MP Wide rear camera
• 7MP Wide front camera
• Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the Home button
• Haptic Touch
• 625 nits max brightness (typical)
• Rated IP67 (maximum depth of 1 meter up to 30 minutes) under IEC standard 60529
• Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating
• Display Zoom
• Reachability

All that and more are readily available on Apple’s site, but there are two key specs that are noticeably absent from the iPhone SE 2020 page: RAM and battery size. As it turns out, however, Apple wireless carrier partner China Telecom just accidentally let the cat out of the bag.

According to the carrier’s iPhone SE listing, the new iPhone SE has 3GB of RAM and a 1,821 mAh battery. That second detail doesn’t come as any surprise since it’s the exact same batter that was found in the iPhone 8. As for RAM, however, that 3GB figure definitely comes as a pleasant surprise. Apple’s iPhone 8 only had 2GB of RAM, so the 50% increase coupled with Apple’s much newer A13 Bionic chip means the new iPhone SE will be far faster and more powerful than the iPhone 8. If you were already toying with the idea of picking one up when iPhone SE preorders open on Friday, April 17th, you just got a pleasant surprise that should seal the deal.
